Thinking About The Future

“I have to have this!” I screamed while shopping with my dad. I then randomly start putting things in the cart. “Of course, anything for you”, he says. This is how I usually get what I want, my dad will buy it for me because I’m the youngest. Getting what I want most of the time, I must admit makes me a little spoiled. Kind of like I consume things that are not needed…

I see myself as a consumer. Evidence that shows that I’m a consumer would probably be my room. If you go into my room you would see a plasma T.V. not on a stand , of course not, but posted to my wall like a picture frame. My walls are painted pink, because I asked my dad if he could paint them my favorite color. Next to my T.V. is my desk with a big computer on it, not to mention  my laptop too. I also asked for a queen size bed because i like a lot of room when I sleep and I have a two rack closet full of clothes from my favorite stores plus my overly stuffed drawers. I have lights built into my dresser mirror. The lights and the T.V. are always on, its the only way I can sleep. I think having all this stuff is wasteful. I can live without it, but I prefer to own most of the things.

I’m not like a hoarder though, hoarders are extreme when it comes to owing things. Hoarders are like birds, they collect things in their homes, in this case their nest, and never let them go. They have an anxiety to own things that was no real value, but the things are important to them in some form. They feel powerless with out  surplus amount of items. Hoarding is very unhealthy because it causes a mess and messes attract bugs and rodents, this can than make the hoarder very ill.

Thinking about being a consumer has made me notice that it’s not very healthy to be wasteful. I should only ask for things when they are absolutely needed. And it would probably be a good idea to turn off my lights and T.V once in a while. People like me whom consume and waste things are not helping the Earth and contributing to global warming, which we need to cut down on to help save the world. This also made me think of the “Common Good” penny game we played in class, if everyone took as many pennies as they wanted and were greedy, like a consumer, some people would be left with nothing.  If everyone took what they absolutely needed and left some for others, more people will benefit in the end. All of this shows that this world needs change and all of us really need to think of the future and others, not only themselves.

Maria, using your room as an example of your consumerism was an excellent idea. There was a lot of evidence there to show you get what you want! That being said I am glad you recognize being such a big time consumer has its drawbacks and impact on the world. Why is it a good idea to turn off lights or the television when you don’t use it? How many people in the “Common Good” game really benefited from their consumerism? How have you been thinking of the future lately?

I liked the way you started out with a real life situation. I also like your style of writting and how you talked alot about what you have.

i really liked your popst! It was really good and I love how you used yourself as an example of how people are wasteful everyday and how they can do little things to help the Earth and it’s not that hard becuase those tittle things could take you a long way. I also like how everything flowed together really well. It was cool how you used yourself and youer room as evidence of what you were trying to say an=bout being wasteful and it really helped in getting your point accross. All I would change is shortening the hoarder paragraph and making it a part of the consumer paragraph becuase some of the stuff that you included at the end of the hoarder paragraph weas not needed. But, I really liked how you got your point accross, but were realistic too about that people do this everyday without even knowing it and it’s easy to change it. Nice job!
